How to teach tough subjects to a homeschooler?

Here are a few ideas that can help you handle tough subjects.

1. Pray. Begin your day with God. God can help you overcome just about anything! Ask Him for patience, encouragement, and wisdom.
2. Learn together. Let your children know that you are not the best in the subject and that you will also be learning with them!
3. Stay balanced. There is no need to be over excited to teach something that intimidates you—or be completely annoyed by it. However, never tell your children that you dislike the subject. If you use words such as, “This subject is very difficult and I never liked it,” you’ll instill in your child the same fear.
4. Use the tools given to you. When you were learning the subject as a child, you did not have the solution key or the teacher’s edition giving you a detailed explanation and a clear path to the solution. However, today, every text book comes with it. Moreover, you can always look at free resources such as, online tutorials or YouTube videos if you require the extra help.
5. Prepare. Make sure you study ahead so you do not feel like you are always learning new concepts at the very last minute.
6. Slow down. It is completely okay to take a little more time. You can take an extra day to review. Break up that tough lesson into easy parts. Teach tough subjects with easy, fun ones to give your brain a break.
7. Older children can self-study. When your children have learned to read, write and are responsible and independent, there is so much they can learn on their own. Give your children a chance by handing them the day’s work, then observing how they do.
8. Join co-op classes. Ask local homeschool communities for help finding co-ops that meet your needs.
Homeschooling is not always easy, but with just a little patience and handwork, you will make it through.
