Raising smart homeschool children

Wish to prepare your homeschoolers for life and optimize their intellectual development? Here is how you can raise smart children:

  1. Teaching through everyday experiences. Make sure you include teaching through everyday experiences as part of learning. Encourage their love of learning and curiosity.
  2. Include every form of learning. It is believed that success in school comes from parents who value every form of learning –scientific and artistic.
  3. Teach independence. When children dress themselves and choose their own clothes, they learn independence.  Offering your child the chance to make their own choices increases their decision-making skills and self-confidence that plays a crucial role in their development.
  4. Spend quality time with the child to make them secure.
  5. Be a motivator. It is important to motivate the child, but do not force them.  By giving them the choice to choose what they want to play with gives them the feeling of having more control over their life and gives them confidence.
  6. Maintain your position as a parent. When children have too much control on their parents, they become more fearful and unhappy.  They do not want that responsibility. They are a lot happier and more secure when the parents set rules and limits.  Be strong with your child.  You are the adult and it is your job to act like one.
  7. Give your child a set time and a quiet place to study. Not all preschoolers have a set study time– they often study after dinner, or in between TV shows. Some are distracted by technology such as, cell phone. Distraction and improper timing makes it easier for students to lose interest in studies. Topics especially in science or math curriculum require reflection and practice. With distraction, how can you expect your child to think?
Make it very clear to your child that their main job is to study and be serious about homeschool. During the weekdays, the number one priority of the family should be the child’s schooling.
