Some facts about Homeschooling


Thinking of "homeschooling" your child? If you have a big family or have children who are socially awkward, here are some statistics that will definitely surprise you: 

  1. Children react well to homeschooling education. Only 1 percentage point differentiates female and male students in standardized scores with girls averaging 88% and boys 87%.
  2. Homeschoolers tend to perform almost 39% above average in tests. Children who are homeschooled test at approximately 89% in subject by subject test scores, which is above the national aggregate.
  3. Homeschooled children in lower income groups outperform in public education. Even those families that make a combined income of below CAD 30,000 per annum outperformed public education by almost 30% in regulated test scores.
  4. Children who are homeschooled by parents with no college degree do better than those getting public education. Even within families where neither of the parents have a college degree, children are tested 83%. This is 33% above the average.
  5. It has been found that spending a lot of money per child does not guarantee a good education. Homeschoolers spend an average of CAD 600 per student every year which includes the cost of supplies and curriculum, while costs of public education can go up to nearly CAD 12000. Moreover, performance wise homeschool students tend to outperform public students at all times.
  6. Homeschool children who have parents with teaching certification do not perform better than those with no certification of teaching. In fact according to an analysis, homeschool performance of certified educators is actually a percent lower than that of non-certified homeschoolers.
These wonderful statistics should serve those who are thinking of homeschooling but are still making their evaluation. Homeschooling has certainly opened gates for those parents who wish to use customized curriculums that best suit the needs of their children. This form of education is also good for those who wish to inculcate good Christian values within their children.
